2013 Pebble Beach Concours and the 1930 Lincoln Judkins Coupe

I was very pleased to see David Schultz's 1930 Lincoln Judkins Coupe win a class award at this year's Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance - Congratulations. David is a passionate Classic Car guy and past-president of the CCCA. I believe he also judged at Pebble Beach this year.

J.B. Judkins Company was a coachbuilder out of Amesbury, MA. They built custom body's for many premier brands in the early years. According to Mark Theobald at coachbuilt.com, Judkins had been building custom bodies for Lincoln prior to Ford's take-over of Lincoln in 1922. Judkins would expand it's output for Lincoln thereafter, building custom series-built bodies at it's Merrimac plant. (Judkins had opened a new plant in 1919 to serve a large order of production bodies for mercer and called the enterprise Merrimac). The two door coupe was the second most popular Judkins body built for Lincoln.

I was interested to see Brent Merrill's (of Toronto, Canada) 1931 Cadillac V-16 Fleetwood Coupe at Pebble Beach. I've written about a similar car: http://vintagemotoring.blogspot.com/2012/10/the-cadillac-v16.html. Originally priced at $5950.00, the Fleetwood Coupe was style number 4376 and this car was probably bodied in Fleetwood, PA before the company make the move to Detroit. Mr. Merrill's car looks beautiful in these colors and rightfully achieved a class win - Congratulations.

Simplex was a featured marque at this year's Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance and a number of great cars were shown. Here's one I've written about before: http://vintagemotoring.blogspot.com/2012/04/story-of-1911-simplex.html. This car was found and restored by Ed Roy back in the early 1950s. The car has traveled through the collections of George Grew and Otis Chandler, and is now owned by Ray Scherr of CA. It looks to have been freshened up - lovely - and was awarded a class win. Congratulations.

1958 Glidden Tour - Meredith Auto Museum

The Meredith Auto Museum of Glen & Judy Gould

Here's a picture of the Meredith Auto Museum - a stop on the 1958 Glidden Tour. The Museum was the home to Glen & Judy Gould's collection of cars. Glen and Judy were friends of Dad's and I remember visiting with them as a kid each year at the AACA's Hershey gathering. In the 1970s they moved the collection to Wells, Maine and the the museum still exist today (Glen & Judy have passed, but the museum is run by thier kids): www.wellsautomuseum.com.

I believe the two cars seen out front (by the sign) are Glen's Pathfinder roadster and Charlie Hoyt's 1920 Rolls-Royce Pall-Mall Ghost (chassis 106FW).

1958 Glidden Tour - 1913 Oldsmobile Model 53

1913 Oldsmobile Model 53 on the 1958 Glidden Tour

The successor to The Oldsmobile Limited was the Model 53 of 1913 - one is seen here at the 1958 Glidden Tour. Three inches shorter than the Limited, and with less horsepower (50 hp), it sold for $3,200 originally. These are fairly scarce cars and I don't know who owned this car at the time. However, I found reference to a car that I believe is the car pictured here - said to be owned by Bill Gularte (circa 2007).

1958 Glidden Tour - 1901 3-Wheel Knox

3-wheel Knox on the 1958 Glidden Tour

This is another in my series of posts looking back at the 1958 Glidden Tour. I have had a number of comments over the past few days and have gone back to some of these posts and written updates, so please check them out.

This shot of the Hupmobile, Knox, and Olds is one of my favorites. I've driven some 100 year old cars, but never have I toured in a tiller steer or 3-wheeled car. What an adventure!

There were a number of curved-dash Olds on the 1958 Glidden Tour and I'm not certain who this is - maybe Herb Singe from NJ? However, the 1901 3-wheel Knox (Model A) was owned at the time by Rodger Johnson of South Hadley, MA. Ironically, on my recent visit to the Springfield Museums in Springfield, MA my son took a picture of a 3-wheel Knox. Knox was made in Springfield, MA from 1900 through 1914.

There are at least three, 3-wheel, Knox cars that I know of - maybe more.

Pope Hartford on the 1958 Glidden Tour

Interesting image of a Pope Hartford - this may be the 1910 Pope Hartford of Clarence Huggins of Concord, NH. If anyone can make a positive identification, leave me a comment.

UPDATE: Dad says this is definitely not Clarence Huggins, so who can identify the car?

Joseph Ott's 1908 Locomobile Toy Tonneau

This 1908 Locomobile Type I Toy Tonneau (Chassis #1884) was owned at the time by Joseph Ott (seen with the car). He had recently purchased the Locomobile from James Melton who is said to have acquired the car from the Sessions estate in 1939. The story goes that this car and the 1906 Locomobile factory racer (Old 16) ended up with Mr. Sessions due to the fact that he was an engineer at the company. At the time of the tour, this car was said to be Brewster green with red interior. This car was sold at auction back in 1994, achieving a price of $189,500. A Fantastic car.

1958 Glidden Tour - Packard

1912 Packard Roadster at the 1958 Glidden Tour - driven by J. R. NcNutt

Although there were a few classic era Packard's seen at the 1958 Glidden Tour, this 1912 Model 30 Roadster caught my eye. Sitting in front of the Mt. Washington Hotel in Bretton Woods, NH, I believe this car was owned by J. R. McNutt of Akron, OH at the time. I know of two other 1912 Packard model 30 roadsters (the last year of the t-head 4 cylinder), but neither is this car. Does anyone know where this car is today?

UPDATE: One of our readers believes this Packard is actually a 1911 (chassis #15873) and presently owned by Bob Erausquin in Ohio.

1918 Pierce-Arrow Model 48

Tags
We had the opportunity to travel recently with a friend and his 1918 Pierce-Arrow Model 48 Touring - one of a number of Pierce-Arrow's in his collection, the car looks fantastic for having a decade old restoration. In the mid to late teens, Pierce-Arrow was arguably making the finest American cars. Yes, there were others, such as Packard, but these cars are exceptionally well built. After driving the 1909 Pierce around this car from 1918 seems down-right modern. A very solid and comfortable car to tour with.
